Time Dividends: What We Do with the Hours AI Gives Us

Time Dividends
Matt Juniper

From the desk of Matt Juniper, CEO: When we first started integrating AI into our work at PRAXIS, the conversation was all about productivity. How could we use these tools to move faster, deliver more, and find efficiencies across teams?

Pretty quickly, I realized that while that was a great question, it wasn’t necessarily the right one. The real question was: What should we do with the time we save?

That idea became the foundation for something we now call time dividends, a concept first brought to my attention by the incredible team at Work Time Revolution (who do some great consulting work helping organizations like ours roll out People-First AI implementation strategies!). Just like financial dividends reward investors for smart decisions, time dividends reward teams for working smarter by ensuring they share in the benefits of AI efficiency. When technology gives us hours back, those hours are a form of value — and how we spend them matters most.

The Rule of Thirds

At PRAXIS, we follow a simple principle: time saved through AI should be split into three equal parts — one for learning, one for rest, and one for reinvestment.

  • Learning: Time to train, explore, and experiment with new tools. Not every skill comes from a structured course; sometimes the best learning comes from curiosity and trial.
  • Rest: Time back to recharge. Our journey toward a four-day work week isn’t just a scheduling experiment. It’s an investment in focus, creativity, and wellbeing.
  • Reinvestment: Time to raise the quality of our output. AI helps us move faster, but speed isn’t the goal. Better work is.

When all three parts are in balance, everyone benefits. Employees feel supported and motivated, and clients see the impact in the work itself.

Why “More” Shouldn’t Be the Goal with AI

AI has already changed how we work, but there’s a risk in using it just to accelerate old habits. If all we do is use smarter tools to pack more into the same day, we’ve missed the point – and likely burnt out our talent in the process

The best work doesn’t come from people running on empty. It comes from teams that are rested, curious, and energized (see more on my philosophy about this here!). Giving some of the efficiency gains back to employees doesn’t slow progress — it fuels and accelerates long-term high-quality output.

Because the real goal of AI isn’t to increase sheer volume of output. It’s to improve outcomes.

The Human Side of AI: Driving Adoption and Trust

Technology only works when people believe in it. Many companies struggle with AI adoption not because the tools fail, but because employees don’t see what’s truly in it for them. Every day, they’re exposed to media stories telling them AI will only increase output expectations, or, at wors,  lead to job elimination. Why would any employee buy in to that?

Time dividends help change that story. They show that the hours saved aren’t just for the business to capitalize on. They’re for the people doing the work — for their learning, their growth, and their quality of life.

Once people see that, the skepticism fades, curiosity takes over. And curiosity is what drives meaningful change.

Reclaiming the Art of PR

The future we’re building at PRAXIS is one where AI handles the repetitive and humans handle the remarkable.

Today, many early-career professionals in PR spend a large portion of their time on manual tasks: research, basic formatting, tracking, reporting. AI can take care of that foundational labour, freeing people to focus on strategy, storytelling, and creativity — the reasons most of us got into this business in the first place.

That shift doesn’t just make work more efficient. It makes it more fulfilling.

Keeping the Human Touch

Even with the best tools, the human layer still matters most. Every time we use AI, I encourage our team to pause and ask: What can I bring to this that AI can’t?

That might be intuition, empathy, or the context that comes from experience. Those are the things that turn a good idea into something great.

AI can help us get started faster, but it’s still people who make the work meaningful.

PRAXIS U AIFinal Thought

For me, time dividends are more than a productivity framework. They’re a philosophy for how we build the future of work.

The real benefit of AI isn’t just efficiency — it’s the space it creates for learning, balance, and better ideas. At PRAXIS, our goal isn’t to replace human effort with technology. It’s to make every human hour more valuable.

When we use AI to create time, and then invest that time wisely, we don’t just get more done. We build a healthier, more creative, and more human kind of workplace.
